We have sixteen words in Word/Play today. They all deal with Writing. "Script" or "scrib" are root words that mean "to write". Script has four meanings all to itself. For example, any document, a writing style such as a font, handwriting, and any writing (Hanji is Chinese script, for example.) Scribe is used in a similar way. It means "to write" as well. What are the sixteen words? Here they are:

Word/Play deals with words related to breathing. For example, inspire, perspire, and conspire. All have breathing in them - the root 'spire' means breathing. 'In' means in, 'per' means through, and 'con' means with.

The Trilingual Lesson deals with asking when someone's birthday is. The closest English has to 先生

is 'Sir' although it is rarely used these days. In Japanese 先生 means 'teacher' but here it means an older person. We learn the following:

先生, 您   是 哪   年 出生 的?

Sir, in what year were you born?

Wǒ shì 1976 nián chūshēng de.

Hokudai/Cast 202's Word/Play wonders if Xylophobe is a word or not. What does it mean? It means "Fear of xylophones." Phones means 'sound' and xylo means 'wood.' If you look at the Japanese word for xylophone, you'll see 木琴. The first kanji: 木 means 'wood' and the second, 琴, also means Koto, the musical instrument.

We are fortunate to live far away from the devastation of the 東北 area and are sharing our safety with the 避難者.

Words are flowing endlessly like rain into a paper cup at Hokudai/Cast this week. First we interviewed students and learned how to say 'high school' in Chinese.
